Goal:
Reduce energy costs and consumption by installing a LED exterior signage solution to support the Sumas restaurant “green restaurant design” initiative.

Annual energy cost savings:
$3,108.00
Annual kWh savings:
38,850 kWh
Equivalent CO2 emissions averted per year:
54,136 lbs of carbon dioxide (CO2)

The situation.

Signage is becoming more and more critical in the art of merchandising and branding. A sign portrays more than a business name; it represents the brand and business presence. This is especially true for the hospitality and food industry, where cleanliness, safety and attention to detail are key differentiators for customers. A corporate sign that is attractive and well lit after dark could convey a brand as sanitary and well operated, which places that restaurant in the best light for customers.

With this in mind, as well as the desire to create a green restaurant design, the Sumas McDonald’s enlisted the help of Chris’s Sign Service to update its fluorescent exterior signage. Partnering with OSRAM SYLVANIA and Nedco Distributors, Chris’s Sign Service evaluated a LED solution to retrofit the signage, seeking the benefits of greater energy savings, longer life, and improved performance. Together the trio determined that the SYLVANIA BackLED L LED Lighting System would be a perfect fit for the exterior signage application. The cutting-edge LED module also meets the sustainability goals of the restaurant with its high efficacy to get more light for each energy dollar.

The solution.

SYLVANIA’s BackLED L is an ideal solution to light box signs and channel letters; like the iconic McDonald’s Arches at the Sumas location. Chris’s Sign Service used the high performance white (6500K) module to light in the yellow and red portions of the sign and menu. These small, versatile LED light sources are extremely cost effective, easy to install/maintain, and last upwards of 50,000 hours. The module features OSRAM’s proprietary Flat-Ray optical technology, which ensures superior light uniformity at the sign face to enhance the professional image. In addition, the high brightness BackLED L module is highly energy efficient which results in energy savings as well as material savings for accelerated return on investment.

The effect.

Prior to the retrofit, the total power consumption with the fluorescent system was 5,922 watts. However with the new SYLVANIA BackLED L, annual power consumption was lowered to 1,487 watts. This is a 4,435 watts savings, a 75 percent reduction. The restaurant operates these exterior signs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, which means that the restaurant is saving $3,108 for the year ($259/month) in power. By reducing the sign’s annual energy consumption and carbon footprint by 75 percent, McDonalds was able to yield incredible systainability savings equating to 54, 136 pounds of carbon dioxide over the life of the modules. The savings is equivalent to the reduction of emissions from the use of 2,791 gallons of gasoline. The Sumas McDonald’s location was able to benefit from the BC Hydro Power Smart program and received nearly $10,000 in rebate money.

The bottom line.

Realizing the benefits of LED solutions has resulted in a great pay off to Sumas McDonald’s restaurant. Chris’s Sign Services, OSRAM SYLVANIA and Nedco provided the right solution with the SYLVANIA BackLED L. Like many LED retrofit systems, the BackLED L lighting system helped the Sumas McDonald’s enterprise save money, consume less energy and reduce their carbon footprint.
